Staff and students support Bike Week
Posted 25 June 2008
Staff at Harper Adams did their bit for national Bike Week (14-21 June) by cycling in to work.
Those who took part and rode into work on Friday June 20 were rewarded with a free breakfast upon arrival. National Bike Week takes place every year and is aimed at getting people to ditch the car for the week and use their bikes in a bid to get fit and be active.
Also during Bike Week, the University College took delivery of six bicycles from David Mellor Cycles, Shrewsbury, for a new hire scheme that should help students get fit and cut their carbon footprints.
The bikes have been purchased partly through the Awards for All Big Lottery Scheme after a grant of £10,000 was secured by lecturer Andrea Humphries for sustainability projects. In addition, the Student Union RAG team provided funds towards helmets, locks and lights. David Mellor Cycles will provide an initial six-months’ bicycle maintenance.
The college’s business development manager for sustainable technologies, Gaynor Orton, said: “The Student Bike Scheme will allow students to hire the cycles for a week at a time, with safety leaflets and cycle routes being provided. A cycle proficiency course will be provided during the autumn term by Telford & Wrekin Council.”
